Science and Education at the University of Tsukuba, Japan

Giovedì 16 maggio 2019, ore 14.30 aula L1.32, primo piano, edificio Fisica, Dipartimento FIM, Modena

Relatore: Prof. Nobuyuki Sano

Abstract:   Tsukuba Science City is the first and largest “Science City” in Japan, constructed as a national project in 1970 for the promotion of science and technology and it includes large facilities and advanced research resources. The University of Tsukuba was relocated from Tokyo and reconstructed within the Science City of Tsukuba in 1973. Since then, the University has played a key role in promoting science and technology in this geographical area of Japan. I have been involved, as Dean and Provost of the School of Science and Technology, in many scientific and educational projects as, for example, the launch of new graduate and undergraduate programs. In my talk, I would like to introduce the University of Tsukuba and the Science City, and some of the recent research and educational activities related to nanoscience and nanotechnology.

Nobuyuki Sano received the Ph.D. degree in theoretical physics from Auburn University, Auburn, U.S.A., in 1988. From 1988 to 1995, he was a Research Scientist with NTT LSI Laboratories, Atsugi, and since 1995 he is with the Institute of Applied Physics, the University of Tsukuba, Tsukuba (Japan), where he is a Professor. He served as Dean of the College of Engineering Science from 2012 to 2014, and Provost of the School of Science and Engineering from 2016 to 2018. He has been working on the theory of electron transport in semiconductors, on the Monte Carlo and Drift-Diffusion simulations of semiconductor devices, and on quantum transport in nano-scale structures based on many-particle theory.
